Why a Women's Resource Center? 1. History The positive history of women's leadership in the Adventist Church is not known. WRC is beginning to collect it. 2. Recognition The achievements of Adventist women have never been systematicallydocumented and affirmed. WRC holds public events to honor such women orinvites them to speak on campus. 3. Issues Issues that affect women's lives have not always been addressed--suchas equal pay for equal work, health concerns, domestic violence, sexualabuse, etc. WRC holds public events and collects resources that helpsboth men and women address these issues personally and in a classroomsetting. 4. Theology Adventists today, like most Christian churches, have not alwaysinterpreted Scripture in a way that is helpful to women. WRC collectsresearch papers and books and develops special programs that offerpositive points of view about the Bible and women. 5. Current events Adventist women in the United States live in a society that promoteswomen's equality as an ideal and as a matter of law. WRC collectsarticles and newspaper clippings that document these on-goingdevelopments in society and in other religions. 6. Education Seventh-day Adventist church leaders and members live in more than 200countries of the world. In many cultures, women's rights are notunderstood or accepted. WRC desires to be a center for on-goingeducation and advocacy for women's equality in the church. 7. Ministry Since the 1970's Adventist women in the U.S. and elsewhere havegradually begun to find work as pastors, chaplains, religion teachers, evangelists, and conference leaders--but they often facemisunderstanding, strong opposition, and isolation. In many cases thechurch does not encourage their work or acknowledge their presence. WRCis cooperating with other Adventist women's groups to identify thesewomen and minister to them. 8. Clearinghouse and referrals No one group interested in advancing the cause of Adventist women hasalso had the energy or resources to keep in touch with the servicesthat other groups are offering. WRC desires to keep up-to-date withother such groups and encourage cooperation, sharing of information, and networking among them.
